Wow! We have been extremely busy this past month and a half. It is amazing that May is just around the corner!
Math: We finished with Unit 9 which was focused around graphing on a Cartesian plane and some measurement topics such as area, volume and capacity. Students have a solid understanding of the differences between a two and three-dimensional object. They are also very skilled at using the x and y axis to plot ordered pairs in any of the quadrants. We are currently working on Unit 10 which focuses on Algebra skills. Students are mastering solving for variables and using ratios. The Unit 10 assessment will be on Tuesday, May 4th.
Language Arts: Students did a great job during our study of poetry. We read several different poems throughout the unit. The books we read are: Love That Dog, Hate That Cat, Poetry Matters, and The Place My Words are Looking For. Throughout this unit students focused on literal and inferential comprehension within poems, compared poets and poems and also looked at author’s purpose. Students did a fantastic job using the pillars of poetry (emotions, images and songs) in writing their own poems. Student work will be on display during our Poetry Share which will be held on Friday, May 7th. You are invited to attend and provide feedback to our budding poets. We can also UStream this presentation for any parent or relative who would like to share in our celebration.
Science/Social Studies: We took our south assessment and worked on physical and chemical tests within our Food Chemistry unit. Up next we’ll be looking at Ecosystems and the Midwest/West regions of the United States. Students will also be assigned a state project before the end of the year.
PSSA and scheduling: PSSAs took over our schedules in April. We’ll be back to a more regular routine now that the Reading, Math and Writing PSSAs are over. Spelling units will resume the first week of May.
Spelling Bee: Congratulations to Krista, Vicky, Marina, Jared, Cole, and Lindsey who will be representing our class in the school spelling bee. All students were given a pre-assessment with many common misspellings. These students found and corrected the most errors. Students and Parents, make sure you have your packet of words to study and are spending a little time each night practicing. The spelling bee will be held on Monday, May 17th at 1:45 in the multipurpose room. Hope to see you there!
Reading Olympics: As you know our teams did a superb job at the competition! We took home two 1st place ribbons and one 2nd place ribbon. What is even more spectacular is that our students read almost 400 books to prepare for the competition! WOW!
Field Trip: We went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art the day after the Reading Olympics so we had an exciting few days that week! Students were intrigued with what the museum had to offer and I’m sure they would all get a lot out of another visit. Don’t forget the Allentown Art Museum is local and has a lot to offer as well.
FYI: Get out your calendars-End of the Year Dates and Activities:
Tidbits: Our Relay for Life change drive was huge success. As a school we raised over $1,900. WOW! TV staff will be at Memorial Park this weekend and hosting a cupcake decorating station. The weather is supposed to be nice; stop by if you have a chance. We also had 3rd marking period report cards and conferences in the past few weeks. As always, thank you for your open communication and input in your child’s education.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR VERY SUPPORTIVE PTO! WE REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR US!
